Power Delivery is the standard that lets a USB-C charger and your device agree on how much power to move. Without it, a USB-C port delivers roughly 7.5W — slower than a phone charger from a decade ago. With it, the same port can carry up to 240W.

The number you need is set by the device, not the charger: 20–30W for a phone, 30W for a tablet, 65W for a 13-inch laptop, 100W for a 16-inch laptop. Anything above that is money spent on headroom you will not use. Below it, the device charges slowly or, on a laptop in use, not at all.

What Power Delivery actually does

Before any meaningful current flows, the charger and the device hold a short conversation. The charger advertises what it can supply — a set of voltage and current pairs called PDOs — and the device picks the highest one it can safely take. A phone asks for 9V at 2.2A. A laptop asks for 20V at 5A. The same charger serves both, because the device is choosing.

This is why a 100W charger cannot damage a phone. It is also why an underpowered charger is the real risk: a 30W charger on a laptop that wants 65W will keep the battery from falling while the machine idles, and lose ground the moment you do anything demanding.

45W, 65W, 100W: reading the number on the box

Wattage claims are where these listings get slippery, in two specific ways.

Shared versus per-port.A “65W 3-port” charger almost always means 65W split across three ports, not 65W each. Plug in a second device and the first one drops — often from 65W to 45W, sometimes to 18W. If the listing does not publish a breakdown of what each port delivers when all are in use, that is usually because the breakdown is unflattering.

Peak versus sustained. Some chargers advertise a figure they hold for a few minutes before heat forces them down. GaN — gallium nitride — is the thing worth paying for here: it runs cooler, so it sustains its rating and is roughly half the size of an older silicon charger at the same output.

The highest wattage worth buying

240W chargers exist, and almost nobody needs one. The 240W tier of the specification was added for gaming laptops and monitors that draw more than a 100W charger can supply. If you are shopping for a phone, a tablet, or an ordinary laptop, 240W buys you a heavier object and a larger bill.

The genuinely useful ceiling for most people is 65W, which fast-charges a phone, runs a tablet, and powers a small laptop. Step to 100W only if you have a 15-inch or larger laptop, or you want one charger to run a laptop and a phone at full speed simultaneously.

The cable is half the charger

This is the single most common reason a perfectly good charger appears not to work, and it is almost never mentioned in the listing.

Above 60W, a USB-C cable must be e-marked — it carries a chip that tells the charger how much current it can survive. Without one, a 100W charger will quietly limit itself to 60W. Above 100W you need a newer EPR cable rated for 240W. The charger will not warn you; it will simply charge more slowly than the box promised, and the charger will get the blame.

If a 100W charger is not charging a laptop at full speed, change the cable before returning the charger.

PPS, and why Samsung owners should care

Programmable Power Supply is an extension to PD that lets the voltage move in 20mV steps instead of fixed jumps. That precision reduces heat, which matters because heat is what ages a battery.

Samsung’s 45W Super Fast Charging 2.0 requires PPS specifically. A Galaxy plugged into a 45W charger without PPS falls back to 25W. Everyone else can treat PPS as a small bonus rather than a requirement.

What qualifies right now

Check the specification for “PD” or “Power Delivery” explicitly. A listing that mentions USB-C repeatedly and never mentions PD is usually telling you something by omission.

Common questions

Do I need Power Delivery, or is any USB-C charger fine?

A USB-C port is a shape, not a promise. Without Power Delivery a USB-C charger typically delivers around 7.5W, which is slower than the charger that came with a phone a decade ago. If the listing never says PD, assume it does not have it.

How many watts do I actually need?

A phone takes 20 to 30W. A tablet takes about 30W. A 13-inch laptop takes 65W. A 16-inch laptop takes 100W. Buying above what the device requests wastes money rather than charging it faster — the device and charger negotiate a rate, and the device decides.

Will a 100W charger damage my phone?

No. Power Delivery negotiates before any current flows, so a 100W charger gives a phone the 20W it asks for. The risk runs the other way: an underpowered charger on a laptop will charge slowly or not at all while in use.

Does the cable matter?

Above 60W, yes, and it is the most common reason a charger appears not to work. Anything over 60W needs an e-marked cable with a chip that reports its rating, and 240W needs a newer EPR cable. A cheap cable will silently cap a 100W charger at 60W.

One number to ignore while you shop: the discount badge. On accessories the original price is the least reliable figure in the listing, and a charger “reduced” from $89.99 to $25.99 was almost certainly always a twenty-six dollar charger.
